Jean Lundegaard (née Gustafson) is a character in the movie Fargo. She was the wife of Jerry Lundegaard and the victim of his ill-fated kidnapping scheme.

Biography[]

Jean Gustafson was born to Wade Gustafson and an unknown woman. Her father became wealthy through his business ventures during the course of her childhood. At some point she married Jerry Lundegaard, changing her name to Jean Lundegaard, and they had a son named Scotty. Her father did not approve of Jerry, but he did eventually hire him as a salesman at his company, Gustafson Motors. Jean lived as a homemaker in the family's Minneapolis, Minnesota home, and she doted over Scotty, who she often felt was not living up to his academic potential.

Fargo[]

In January 1987, Jean is spending a normal day at home when she sees a man, Carl Showalter, in a ski mask peering in the back door. Suddenly, he breaks through the glass. Jean panics and runs towards the front door, which is smashed open by another man, Gaear Grimsrud, who seizes her. In the struggle, she bites his finger, causing him to release her. She flees into the bathroom and, in a moment of cleverness, opens the window to fool them into thinking she fled the house, and hides in the bathtub behind the shower curtain. However, Grimsrud enters the bathroom and soon senses his presence. Terrified, Jean bursts out of the tub and runs away, only to trip down the stairs and knock herself unconscious.

When she wakes up, she is hooded, bound, and gagged in the backseat of a car. Later that night, her captors are pulled over by a State Trooper. Showalter warns her not to make any noises or he will shoot her. When he acts suspiciously, the trooper hears Jean whimpering in the backseat. Unfortunately, her chance at rescue is foiled when Grimsrud murders the trooper.

Early that morning, Jean's captors arrive at a remote lakeside cabin. She manages to escape their clutches, but bound and unable to see, she merely stumbles around in the snow, falling over multiple times, while Showalter laughs at her. They tie her to a chair inside the cabin.

Several days later, Jean has a breakdown and begins shrieking loudly. This annoys Grimsrud, who is watching a soap opera, so he brutally beats her to death. Her body is later discovered by the police.
