"Only a fool thinks he can solve the world's problems."
―Ari Ziskind[src]

Ari Ziskind is a minor character in Fargo Season 1. He is Gus's neighbor and husband to Rachel Ziskind.

History[]

Late one night, Ari sits at his dinner table alone. He looks across the alleyway to see Gus Grimly also at his dinner table alone, lost in thought. Ari waves to him, and he waves back. They both open their windows to speak to one another. Ari tells him that his wife thinks out loud in her sleep, so this is his one moment of peace and quiet. After a brief discussion, Ari goes over to the Grimly residence.

Ari talks about his misfortunes with Gus involving cold weather and holes in their clothing. Despite this however, he does not complain and rather sees them as gifts. Gus asks him what he should do about his situation with Lorne Malvo. He knows he is guilty, yet Malvo has everyone convinced otherwise. He asks if he should risk his life pursuing him or let him go.

He replies with a parable about a rich man who realizes the world is filled with misery and gives up everything in order to stop said misery from happening. In the end when he has nothing left to give, people in the world are still suffering. Having failed, he commits suicide. Gus seems confused by this story. Ari tells him the moral of the story is that only a fool thinks he can solve the world's problems.

Later that night, Malvo watches Gus in his apartment while listening for radio chatter. Ari approaches Malvo's car, knocks on the window and tells him he's not supposed to be here. Malvo tries brushing him off, but Ari threatens to call the cops since he's part of the neighborhood watch. Malvo tries to intimidate him but with no avail. Eventually, he drives away.
